Former Senator Calls Gay Marriage Amendment "Silly"

Former Senator John Danforth (R-MO) has come out strongly against attempts to pass a federal constitutional amendment which would ban gay marriage across the United States. Speaking before the Log Cabin Republicans National Convention, Danforth noted that "[o]nce before, the Constitution was amended to try to deal with matters of human behavior; that was Prohibition. That was such a flop that that was repealed 13 years later." A proposed vote in the Senate on an anti-gay marriage amendment is scheduled for June. The former Senator suggested that passage of such an amendment would be a sizable mistake. "Some historian should really look at all of the proposals that have been forth throughout the history of our country for possible constitutional amendments. Maybe at some point in time there was one that was sillier than this one, but I don't know of one."

As a native Missourian, I found Senator Danforth's willingness to break ranks inspiring, and I think he is owed respect for his remarks even if one disagress with their content. I have had personal contact with Seantor Danforth, and he is as genuine in person as his public persona suggests. As I discuss here, I think we need more public servants like Senator Danforth.
