Government Watch List Expands To One Million

The federal government’s terrorist watch list now contains one million names, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which conducted a press briefing on the matter this morning at the National Press Club. The list, which the government started to compile after 9/11, is used to check people entering the country through land border crossings, airports and seaports. At the press briefing, the ACLU argued that the list wrongly includes thousands of Americans. Former Assistant Attorney General Jim Robinson joined the ACLU at its briefing to explain that he is frequently delayed for hours at airports because his name is on the watch list. Robinson spoke last year on an ACS panel called, “Principles to Guide the Department of Justice Under the Next Attorney General.”

UPDATE: Jon Stewart offered these comments about the watch list on a recent episode of "The Daily Show."
