Teacher-led Cheating Casts Doubt on No Child Left Behind

A Dallas Morning News investigation has uncovered teacher-led cheating on standardized tests in dozens or perhaps hundreds of Texas schools. The Texas testing regime became the model for the nationwide program under No Child Left Behind.

The evidence of cheating consists of striking increases in scores for a particular grade level or between subjects. Two hundred schools had suspicious results. Some cheating was painfully obvious. For example, even though forth graders at the Sanderson Elementary School in Houston scored in the bottom 2% in math, fifth graders at the school scored highest of any school in Texas, with 90% getting near-perfect scores. But with so much detectable cheating, one wonders how much goes unnoticed. The revelation has raised questions over whether the accountability system can effectively measure school performance.
