High Court Kicks Off New Term

The U.S. Supreme Court’s new term gets underway this morning. The high court will hear arguments in nine cases this week. Today’s arguments include a preemption claim in Altria Group v. Good. Specifically the high court will consider whether federal law preempts state tort claims against tobacco companies over the marketing of so-called “light” cigarettes. For more information on today’s hearings, see ScotusBlog. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case involving the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. Also on Wednesday, the high court will hear arguments in Crawford v. Nashville, a case involving an employee’s anti-retaliation claim. The case was the subject of a recent guest blog for ACS. The justices today also added seven cases to its docket.
