Abramoff Sentencing Roundup
As widely reported, uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced yesterday to 6 years for his involvement in the fraudulent purchase of a Florida casino cruise line, only one of several investigations he's involved in.
Talkleft and Sentencing Law and Policy examine the "creative lawyering" of Abramoff's team, especially a 60 page sentencing memo requesting a term at the bottom of the Guideline range despite the fact that there will probably be a later reduction for cooperation in the ongoing investigations. The memo states, "he asks the Court to impose this sentence in recognition of his extraordinary history of good works for his community and the country, and the extraordinary impact his incarceration will have on his wife and five teenage children."
Talkleft adds "Bottom line: I don't think Abramoff will do more than three to four years. But, with a $21 million restitution order hanging over his head, he may never be a fat cat again."
And check out at least one idea for Jack's prison ink.
