FISA Vote Delayed Until Next Year

The Senate yesterday put off until next year consideration of retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies that aided the government in wiretapping Americans without first obtaining a warrant, the New York Times reported. Multiple versions of legislation that would extend and amend provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act had been considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Intelligence Committee.

The version of the bill brought to the Senate floor prompted threats of a filibuster by Senator Dodd (D-CT) and ultimately led to the delay of consideration of the legislation pending discussion of the retroactive immunity provisions, according to the Huffington Post.

Background on the attempt to extend and amend powers temporarily granted under the "Protect America Act" is available here.
